A veteran of two marriages, seventeen novels and two best sellers, Norman Pope struggles with writer's block, a nagging prostate condition and loneliness. In an attempt to conquer the doldrums and rejuvenate his creative juices Norman teaches a writing class in his New York apartment, and makes plans to rekindle a relationship with his ex-wife.

Then one of Norman's writing students mysteriously disappears. Digging through the student's manuscript, Norman becomes convinced the novel she was writing got her into trouble. He investigates. They, along with a professor of literature at Columbia University, fight back against formidable odds.

As the tide turns in Norman's favor and the corrupt financial firm begins to crumble, Norman discovers things are not what they seem, that a second conspiracy is at play, that he has been duped. With the help of his good friends, Norman unravels the mystery and begins to conquer his personal demons.
