by Ryan Priest
Jake Marshall has spent his adult life learning, sharing and teaching the Japanese Art of Karate to American students. He's a humble man, but when his dignity is stripped he must call his former student Chris and ask for help.
Chris hasn't spoken with his old high school Karate instructor in years, but a call out of the blue throws him back into the world of gis, fighting and training. Recently beaten down savagely in front of his students, instructor Jake Marshall risks losing not only his business, but his self-respect. He's called because he wants Chris to get back into training an avenge him against the fighter from the competing gym.
The only problem is Chris isn't a teenager anymore. He has a real job, a wife and a child. He can't just drop everything and fight duels as if life were some action movie. Loyalty to his old friend finally persuades Chris to go back, and he and Jake begin trying to rebuild a friendship as they prepare for Chris's big fight.
The way of open hands is not only about fighting, it's a philosophy of human interaction. Along with Chris, Jake must explore the human side to the art he thought he knew so well.
