Butterfly Kisses is more than just the ticklish way someone kisses your face. Author Ann Cory explores the metaphor by bringing devout swimmer Charlene and her soul mate Bryan together in intimacy that rivals Charlene’s sleek moves through water.
From the moment Bryan sees her at a swim competition to when he woos her with a basket of scones and tea, we know he’s got his eye on more than just the way Charlene swims.
Romance and sex are hot and vivid between them, but we soon realize there is more than just the breast stroke that keeps these two together. Admiration and commitment keep Bryan by Charlene’s side when she incurs a spine injury during a turn under water at a swim meet.
Ann Cory does a nice job of describing Charlene’s feelings; the hopelessness, the outrage, the selflessness she finally accepts so that Bryan can be free to love someone “whole.” But Bryan’s love goes deeper than Charlene’s bathing suit or her perfect swimmer’s body. He loves her above and beyond that, and is going to help her back on her feet and back into his bed.
Bryan tries to convince her he’s still the man for her, detailing how he’s going to take care of her with sponge baths and the best sex she’s ever had. And then a miracle occurs: Charlene begins to regain feeling. It’s a little cliché, but this is a short read with a guaranteed HEA ending, which Ann Cory delivers with a splash.
