Rookie cop, Renata Bowers, finds being a police officer tougher than she first thought. When homeless man, Kale Tyrell, is brought in for questioning, Renata witnesses police brutality against him. Unsure what to do, she follows her heart and tries to help Kale by asking the offending officers to stop their merciless beating. The officers ignore Renata's pleas, and continue their assault.
Something about Kale brings out compassion in Renata, and she finds out more about him and his past. She is shocked to find out he was accused of being a cop-killer, and also that he murdered his own wife. However, things in his file don't add up, and with the information she has gleaned, Renata believes Kale is innocent and sets out to prove it.
Meanwhile, Kale is released from police custody and returns to 'Soul Haven', a homeless hostel his late wife founded. An ex-army friend approaches Kale to help him find out why homeless people have been going missing. Lured by possibly finding out who really killed his wife, Kale agrees.
Kale and Renata are linked throughout Soul Haven. This book gripped me from beginning to end--a fabulously fast-paced read. Intrigue, suspense, and a nail-biting plot will have you turning the pages in haste to find out what happens next.
I loved this book. Extremely well written, Sonja Baines has a talent that shines from every page. An emotional journey that I'm very glad I took, Soul Haven made me think about homeless people and vow to do more for them. Compassionately told, Soul Haven is one of my favourite reads this year. Wonderful!
