"To write what is worth publishing,
to find honest people to publish it,
and get sensible people to read it,
are the three greatest difficulties of an author"

Lee Van Orden's boss, Jim Rhodes, thinks he's God's gift. Strutting around the office, his manner irks the majority of his female workforce. Lee, in a discussion with her fellow colleagues, mentions in passing that Jim could do with having a witch's broom inserted into his rear, and maybe that would teach him a lesson. All the workers laughingly agree.

Kris Kelley, another worker, doesn't at first appear to find the women's chatter amusing. When Lee finds herself alone with Kris after the other women leave the room, she discovers there is another side to Kris altogether--one Lee would never have suspected.

Hatching a plan, Kris sends a note to Jim Rhodes, inviting him to a sexual rite. So sure is he of his own prowess, Jim takes the bait and is taken to a secluded wood. Lee comes along to witness the rite, performing a major role in it. She realises she is participating in a rite with a witch's coven.

The rite disturbs Lee at first, but it takes an erotic turn, and she finds herself strangely pulled towards the goddess of the coven. The erotic scenes here are done with taste, and, for me, they had a haunting feel. The images drawn from this scene were very stark--the firelight, the darkness--excellent visuals.

Days later, still unable to stop herself thinking about the Goddess, Lee slips a note to Kris asking if she can meet the Goddess again. Lee is invited to join the coven again, and experiences a new beginning in her life, one of awakening and self-knowledge.

The witch angle in this book isn't your usual cackling on a broomstick bunch, but a sensual, almost ethereal band of women. I loved the settings, the witches, and the mysticism of The Witches' Rally. So much so I inquired as to whether there would be a second book starring Lee and Kris. I have it on good authority there is, and I, for one, am extremely pleased about that.

To sum it up: sensual, great visuals, excellent prose, great voice. If you want to be taken into a secret world, read The Witches' Rally.
