Love and War in Lost River
Lost River was once a beautiful and peaceful place to live but the tension between the settlers and the nearby Modoc tribe has reached a boiling point. As the men ready themselves for battle, Lois Campbell can do nothing more than sit back and wait for the day her husband, Jim, goes off to war. However, an incident with a Modoc boy may change everything for the Campbells.
Kis Lee nicely portrays the high tension between the settlers and the Indians. Her descriptions leave you with a vivid picture of Lost River. She has a tendency to overuse the names of people involved in scenes which pulled me out of the narrative on a few occasions, but the story is quickly paced, and overall, an enjoyable read.
Kayla Finds Her Way
Kayla is a small town girl who fools around with whoever is willing just to occupy her time. She hates everything about Alturas, until John Blacksmith moves to town and buys The Lost River Motel where Kayla is a maid.
This story had a strong, if slightly immature, voice. It was a fast read with a decent plot, but I just couldn't relate to the main character, Kayla. She seems to have less than zero self-esteem and though that changes slightly as the story moves along, I don't think she really comes into her own. Despite all that, there were some nicely written, hot and heavy scenes where Ms. Lee draws you into the moment.

I give Kayla Finds Her Way by Kis Lee...Three Cats.
